Job OpportunityPost of Cartographic TechnicianBackground informationHarvey Map Services Ltd makes and publishes maps, principally for walking and cycling. The maps are produced from original data, compiled by photogrammetry and edited to suit the particular purpose. HARVEY also provides data to other publishers, and carries out contract cartographic work.HARVEY maps have gained a reputation for being clear, easy to read and fit for purpose. They are widely used by UK Mountain Rescue Teams, and have received British and international awards for cartographic design. HARVEY maps are distributed UK wide and abroad and are available in book and outdoor shops and through the HARVEY webshop.The company seeks a cartographic technician to join the production team responsible for photogrammetry, editing, field survey, design and layout of published maps.Hours: 40 hrs per weekSalary: Appropriate to qualifications and experience Duties and responsibilitiesThe job will include some or all of the following:GISUsing GIS software, the successful candidate will assist in the implementation and maintenance of the mapping database. This includes digitising, data editing, data capture, database administration and data queryCartographyAssembly and editing of digital plot filesAddition and layout of text and other itemsUpdating using aerial photographyArchiving Field checking and researchField survey on foot or mountain bike recording changesResearching rights of wayDesign workDesign and layout of contract work for external customersDesign and layout of the Company's productsPhotogrammetryStereo plotting from aerial photography using a digital plotter Person specificationThis post is suited to a person who possesses a number of the following aptitudes, attitudes and motivations* A strong interest in maps* Physical fitness consistent with long days on the hills* A methodical approach and an eye for detail* Ability to organise own work and keep to a time scheduleThe successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the following:* Proven ability to work in Adobe Illustrator, preferably in a cartographic environment* Proven familiarity with, and competent use of, GIS software (MapInfo) * Evidence of land navigation skills including observation, contour interpretation, use of compass e.g. as a walker, mountaineer or orienteerDesirable would be:* Familiarity with some or all of the following programs: Avenza MAPublisher, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign* Experience of spatial database design* Familiarity with Mac and PC environments* Familiarity with GPS systems* Experience of the publishing industry, preferably map publishing * Design skills* A full current UK driving licence Further relevant informationThis is a full time post based at the Company's offices in Doune, Perthshire. Field checking work will involve periods away from time to time.
