HARVEY Maps seeks a Cartographer to join its Production Team responsible for photogrammetry, data editing, field survey, design and layout of published maps.

Job Specification
Working closely with colleagues you will be responsible for editing digital plot files, preparing map data for digital applications, updating data from aerial photography using a GIS, as well as maintaining the primary store of spatial data.

The maps are laid out using desktop publishing software and you should have a keen eye for design and be familiar with Adobe Creative Cloud, in particular Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

The Production Team is also responsible for field checking and validating areas of mapping on foot.

The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate they work meticulously with an attention to detail, can work on multiple projects and enjoy working with different people both in and out of the business.

About the role

  • Hours: full-time, 36.25 hours per week.
  • Location: the role is based in our offices in Doune, near Stirling, in central Scotland
  • Salary: commensurate with experience from £24,000

Knowledge, skills and Experience
This role is suited to a recent university graduate, or someone with at least 2 years' workplace experience of manipulating spatial data. The following aptitudes, attitudes and motivations are required.
  • A strong interest in maps and an understanding of the process of mapmaking
  • A methodical approach and an eye for detail
  • Ability to organise your own work and keep to a time schedule
  • The ability to conduct field research on foot. You would be expected to work full days outdoors and this includes all terrain hill walking in all weathers
  • Diligence, creativity, thoroughness

The successful applicant will possess the following:
  • An ability to work in Adobe Creative Cloud (in particular Adobe Illustrator, preferably in a cartographic environment)
  • Proven familiarity with, and competent use of, GIS software
  • Evidence of land navigation skills including observation, contour interpretation and use of a compass

Desirable:
  • Familiarity with some or all of the following programs: Avenza MAPublisher, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Access, Word, Excel), QGIS
  • Experience of working with spatial databases
  • Familiarity with Python and SQL coding
  • Graphic design skills
  • Familiarity with Mac and PC environments
  • A full current UK driving licence
